Now he repeated more precisely: “We are inclined [. ] to assume that the segregation of the Anlagen pairs results from a nuclear division, a hereditarily unequal division [erbungleiche Theilung], a qualitative reduction-division” (Correns 1902a: [303]).

The first, as already mentioned at the beginning of the chapter, was the separation of the two components of an antagonistic (or identical) pair of Anlagen. Correns now called it “zygolytic” separation, indicating that it produced cells with a reduced content of germ plasm. The other was the Carl Correns and the history of genetic linkage 25 separation of the different Anlagen pairs from each other, which Correns now called a “seirolytic” separation, indicating that their serial arrangement was affected, in fact was broken, split, or “lysed” (Correns 1900b: [36]).
