QCA models are often more complex than this. Both regression and QCA formalise their models by using algebraic terms and operators to specify relationships, with regression relying on linear algebra and QCA on Boolean algebra. Description can also take the form of verbal accounts of a case or several cases. Many qualitative researchers aiming to undertake description refer to Geertz’s notion of thick description (Geertz, 1973). He suggests that thick description is the ethnographer’s task, and that what is often referred to as ‘data’ inevitably already reflects the ethnographer’s selection of relevant contextual information and his or her construction of meaning.

We can also see that cases are distributed very unevenly across the rows, indicating that not all combinations of factors are equally common. Empirically, this is often the case since potentially causal conditions are often related. This may result in some rows having only a few cases. This latter phenomenon is termed limited diversity, and I discuss it in more detail below. The next step, after obtaining the truth table, is to obtain a minimised Boolean solution.
